A report of two cases with H-type tracheo-esophageal fistula

Tracheo-esophageal fistula (TEF) without esophageal atresia (H-type TEF) is an infrequent congenital anomaly that comprising of only 4% of tracheo-esophageal malformations. H-Type TEF commonly present with recurrent chest infection owing to both missed and delayed diagnosis as well as cyanosis and choking during feeds. Various methods that have been applied to prove the presence of a suspected H-type TEF include contrast esophagography, cineesophagography and bronchoscopy/esophagoscopy. In this report, we present two infants with H-type TEF diagnosed by cineesophagography. H-Type TEFs were repaired by cervical route by lifting the fistula with the insertion of a Fogarty balloon catheter through the trachea and withdrawing through the mouth.
