Introduction: Written information for preoperational preparation and patient’s training facilitates obtaining information about procedures for both patients and relatives who will deliver the care for the patient. Besides this let them to recall again what they’ve forgotten. This material must necessarily be intelligible.

Objective: This study was designed for determining the level of comprehension of the informative booklet given to the families of the patient in pediatric surgery unit.

Material-method: This descriptive study was conducted in a pediatric surgery unit of university research hospital between the dates July 1, 2013 - August 29, 2013. The sampling of the study consisted of parents of children who underwent surgery under general anesthesia (n=92).  The data were collected with face to face meetings with the families using a questionnaire (17 questions) developed by the researchers. Data analysis was performed with SPSS 16.0 for windows   In the evaluation of data, numerical values and percentages were used.

Findings: 66.3% of the family members which participated in the study  were child's mother, and 29.3% were primary school graduates, while 46.7% worked as a self-employed worker. 29.3% of the children were at 3-6 age group, 68.5% were male, 60.9% were not having any formal education. 83.7% of families spent the night at home before the surgery, 70.7% had been given the booklet. 96.92% of families with the booklet had read it. 38.46% had the in the same day of surgery. Time interval for information gathering was adequate in 87.69%. Most families commented positively about the booklet according to the evaluation criteria of written material.

Conclusion: The majority of the families who had the booklet found it helpful in terms of subject, content, images, font as well as given information and the language used. was evaluated positively in terms of knowledge and language.

Giriş: Ameliyat öncesi hazırlık ve hasta eğitiminde yazılı bilgi hastaların ve ona bakım verecek yakınlarının uygulamalar hakkında bilgi edinmesini kolaylaştırmakta ve unuttuklarında tekrar okuyarak hatırlamalarına fırsat vermektedir. Bu materyallerin anlaşılır olması önemlidir.

Amaç: Çalışma çocuk cerrahisi kliniğinde ailelere verilen eğitim kitapçığının anlaşılma durumunun belirlenmesi amacıyla yapıldı.

Gereç-Yöntem: Tanımlayıcı tipte olan bu çalışma bir üniversite hastanesi Çocuk Cerrahisi Kliniğinde 1.07.2013-29.08.2013 tarihleri arasında yapıldı. Araştırmanın örneklemini çocukları genel anestezi altında ameliyat olan çalışmaya katılmayı kabul eden aileler (n=92) oluşturdu. Veriler araştırmacılar tarafından geliştirilen soru formu (17 soru) ile ailelerden yüz yüze görüşerek toplandı. Verilerin analizi SPSS for windows 16.0 ile yapıldı. Verilerin değerlendirilmesinde; sayı, yüzde kullanıldı.

Bulgular: Çalışmaya katılan aile bireylerinin %66.3’ünün çocuğun annesi olduğu, %29.3’ünün ilkokul mezunu olduğu, %46.7’sinin serbest meslekte çalıştığı görüldü. Çocukların %29.3’ünün 3-6 yaş grubunda olduğu, %68.5’inin erkek, %60.9’unun okula gitmediği görüldü. Ailelerin % 83.7’sinin ameliyat öncesi geceyi evde geçirdiği, %70.7’sine kitapçık verildiği görüldü. Kitapçık alan ailelerin %96.92’sinin okuduğu, %38.46’sına belgenin ameliyat günü verildiği, %87.69’una sürenin yeterli geldiği görüldü. Ailelerin çoğu kitapçığı yazılı materyal değerlendirme kriterleri ile olumlu olarak değerlendirdi.

Sonuç: Kitapçık alan ailelerin çoğunun kitapçıkları konu, içerik, resim, yazı karakteri, bilgi ve dili bakımından olumlu değerlendirdikleri görüldü.
