Metaphor perceptions of pediatric surgery nurses about their own profession

Introduction: Metaphors (mental imagery), people; events, objects and abstract concepts are seen as tools that try to explain using different metaphors. Understanding how it is perceived by the nurses of the nursing profession through metaphors profession to be better analyzed, it will contribute to the development of the profession and be aware of the problems. The main purpose of this study is to reveal perceptions of the pediatric surgery nurses through metaphors.

Method: Descriptive research design was used in the study. The study population consisted of nurses working at Ege University Pediatric Surgery Service.  The samples consisted of 32 nurses  because of being annual permit and health problem. Data were collected via semi-structured questionnaire forms, including open-ended questions. Each nurse was asked to produce a metaphor about their profession and and to explain the reason why they produced that metaphor.

Results: After termination of the study, it was determined that 23 different metaphors were produced. Of all the metap­hors, 7 of them had positive, 20 of them had negative, and 5 of them had both positive and negative imagery The most frequently used metaphors were “robot”, “angel” and “slave”. In addition, chi-square test was used to understand whether there was a relationship between the categories of metaphors (positive, negative, and both positive and negative) and demographic features of nurses. The analyses did not demonstrate any difference between demographic features of the participants. But nurses working less than 10 years were found to be negative metaphor category.

Conclusion: Using metaphors contributed to reveal the positive and negative aspects of the nursing profession. The study signified that the majority of nurses (62.5%) produced negative metaphors and they were not satisfied with their profession.

Çocuk cerrahisi hemşirelerin kendi mesleklerine ilişkin metafor algıları

Giriş: Metaforlar (zihinsel imgeler), insanların; olayları, nesneleri ve özellikle soyut kavramları farklı benzetmeler kullanarak açıklamaya çalıştıkları araçlar olarak görülmektedir. Metaforlar yoluyla hemşirelik mesleğinin hemşireler tarafından nasıl algılandığının anlaşılması, mesleğin daha iyi analiz edilmesine, sorunların fark edilmesine ve mesleğin geliştirilmesine katkı sağlayacaktır. Bu çalışmanın temel amacı, çocuk cerrahisi hemşirelerinin kendi mesleklerine ilişkin algılarını, metaforlar aracılığıyla ortaya çıkarmaya çalışmaktır.

Yöntem: Araştırma tanımlayıcı bir çalışma niteliğindedir. Araştırmanın evrenini Ege Üniversitesi Çocuk Cerrahi Servisi’nde çalışmakta olan hemşireler oluşturmaktadır. Yıllık izinli ve sağlık problemi olan hemşireler olduğu için örneklemi 32 hemşire oluşturmaktadır. Araştırmada veriler yarı yapılandırılmış anket tekniği ile toplanmıştır. Hemşirelere sorulan açık uçlu soruyla, kendi mesleklerine ilişkin bir metafor üretmesi beklenmiştir. Ayrıca bu metaforun neden ürettiğiyle ilgili nedenin açıklanması istenmiştir.

Bulgular: Araştırma sonunda 23 farklı metafor üretildiği tespit edilmiştir. Üretilen bu metaforların 7 tanesi olumlu, 20 tanesi olumsuz ve 5 tanesi de hem olumlu hem de olumsuz yönleri olan benzetmelerdir. Hemşirelerin en çok kullandıkları metaforlar robot, melek ve köle şeklindedir. Bunlara ek olarak üretilen metaforların kategorileri ile (olumlu, olumsuz, hem olumlu hem olumsuz) katılımcıların demografik özellikleri açısından fark olup olmadığı ki-kare analizi kullanılarak test edilmiş ve herhangi bir farklılığa rastlanmamıştır. Fakat çalışma yılı az olan hemşirelerin metafor kategorilerinin olumsuz olduğu bulunmuştur.

Sonuç: Metafor kullanımı yoluyla hemşirelik mesleğinin olumlu ve olumsuz yönleri daha iyi ortaya çıkarılmıştır. Hemşirelerin çoğunluğunun (%62.5) meslekleriyle ilgili olumsuz anlam içeren metafor ürettiği ve mesleklerinden genel olarak memnun olmadıkları görülmektedir.
