The Battery injuries are being lodged in the esophagus in children

Objective:The outcomes of battery lodged in the esophagus have potentially life threatening complications in children. The management is still controversial after the removal of a battery lodged in the esophagus. The aim of the present study was to compare the relevant studies in the literature to our results of cases in which a button battery was lodged in the esophagus.

Patients and Methods:The data were collected from medical charts from who underwent endoscopic retrieval of an esophageal battery during 2007–2011.. Cases were studied for time and location of the battery in the eosophagus, presenting symptoms, diagnostic evaluation, complications, and outcomes.

Results: 16 patients (10 male, 6 female)  aged 2–99 months (mean age ± SD, 34.81 ± 25.23 months) were evaluated The 87.4% percent of patients who had lodged button battery in the esophagus were younger than 6 years old. The mostly patients were admitted suspicion for an esophageal foreign body. Eight patients suffered from corrosion at different stages, 2 had a tracheoesophageal fistula. Two patients died as a result of complication of button battery ingestion.

Conclusions: Button battery lodged in the esophagus is an urgent condition in children. An endoscopic is required urgentremova and also close follow up.

 

Çocuklarda Özofagusa Takılan Pil Yaralanmaları

Amaç: Özofagusa takılı kalan piller, çocuklarda yaşamı tehdit eden  komplikasyon potansiyeli vardır. Pil özofagustan çıkarıldıktan sonraki tedavisi halen tartışmalıdır. Bu çalışmanın amacı, özofagusa takılı kalan yuvarlak pillerin sonuçlarını literatürde ilgili çalışmalarla karşılaştırmak.

Hasta ve Yöntem: Hasta verileri 2007-2011 yılları arasında özofagusta pil nedeniyle endoskopi uygulanan hastaların tıbbi kayıtlarında elde edilmiştir. Olguların başvurma zamanı, tanı süreci, pilin yeri, semptom, komplikasyon, ve sonuçları açısında değerlendirildi.

Bulgular:16 hastanın ( 10 erkek, 6 kız)  yaşları 2-99 ( 34.81 ± 25,23 ) aydı. Hastaların %87.4’ü 6 yaşında küçüktü. Çağlukla hastalar özofagusta yabancı cisim şüphesi ile başvurdu. 8 hastada faklı derecelerde yanık, 2 hastada trakeoözofageal fistül vardı. İki hastada komplikasyonlar sonucunda öldü.

Sonuç: Çocuklarda özofagusta pil endoskopik acil çıkarmak ve yakın takip gereken acil bir durumdur.
