Misdiagnosed cases as hydatic cyst
Aim Hydatic Cyst is a parasitical disease which requires long term treatment, and can cause serious surgical complications in some cases. Some of the complications are result from the false positive hydatic cyst diagnosis and time loses with unnecessary usage of albendazole, and some other serious complications may result from the recognizing of misdiagnosis at surgery. Method Last ten years data collected from two medical center, and cases whose baseline diagnoses were hydatic cyst although the final diagnosis were chanced at follow-up period were retrospectively investigated in terms of age, gender, final diagnose, diagnostic methods, treatment strategies and complications Findings It was founded that the 6 of the 218 cases of HC were misdiagnosed. Three of the misdiagnose cases were female and the others were male. Mean age of the misdiagnosed cases was 8, 1±4, 2immune hemagglutination test was applied to the all cases (n:6), and the test was positive in the 30% of the cases. Abdominal ultrasound, abdominal and thoracal tomography were applied to the all cases. Radiologicaly diagnoses were hydatic cyst for all cases. Four of the cases had abdominal, and two of the cases had thoracic cystic mass. It was recognized to the misdiagnosis at the time of surgery in all cases, and the final diagnoses were; two of them were undifferentiated embryonic liver sarcoma, and one for all thoracal neuroblastoma, esophageal duplication cysts, simple splenic cyst, intestinal dupplication cyst respectively. In all of the misdiagnosed cases surgeries were chanced as partial hepatectomy, in one patient with debulking of cystic mass,in one patient with splenectomy, in one patient removal of thoracal cystic mass and in two casses removal of abdominal cystic mas. Results Most of the misdiagnosed cases were diagnosed as malignancy at follow-up period. Waste of the time with albendazole treatment is important problem in the malignity. Moreover, extemporaneously against with the misdiagnosis at the time of surgery, requests to the chancing methods of surgery within a short time period. Pediatric surgeons should be mastered about the definitive diagnosis of hydatic cyst, and they also should keep in their mind to the radiological diagnostic mistakes.
