Aim: The aim of the study was evaluation of mental development who have operated with esophageal atresia (EA) in children.

Method:  Between 1996-2011 years, the survived patients who were operated EA were evaluated in the department of pediatric surgery clinic. In addition to their demographic data, mental developments are assessed. For this purpose, the patients were divided into two age groups: 0-6 and 6-16 years. AGTE test was performed in first group, and WISC-R test was in second.

Results: The study which was evaluated a total of 39 survived patients, mean age was 7 years and M/F ratio was 3/2. There were 24 children in the first group and 15 children in the second. The first group was found proper mental development according to their chronological age. Mental development of the second was found between 95-110 IQ levels.

Conclusion:  Although the treatment process was more difficult because of being operated with EA,    there is no significant negative effect on children ‘s mental development.

Amaç: Özefagus atrezisi (ÖA) nedeni ile ameliyat edilmiş çocukların mental gelişimlerinin irdelenmesi.

Yöntem: Çocuk cerrahisi kliniğinde 1996-2011 yılları arasında ÖA nedeni ile ameliyat edilmiş yaşayan olgular değerlendirildi. Demografik verilerine ilave olarak mental gelişimleri değerlendirildi. Bunun için olgular 0-6 ve 6-16 yaş olarak iki gruba ayrıldı. Birinci grupta AGTE, ikinci grupta WISC-R testleri uygulandı.

Bulgular: Toplam 39 yaşayan olgunun değerlendirildiği çalışmada, yaş ortalaması 7, E/K oranı 3/2 idi. Birinci grupta 24 ikinci grupta 15 çocuk vardı. İlk grubun mental gelişimleri takvim yaşına uygun bulundu. İkinci grubun da IQ düzeyleri 95-110 arasında idi.

Sonuç: ÖA nedeni ile ameliyat edilen olguların tedavi süreçleri, göreceli olarak zorluk taşımakla beraber, çocukların mental gelişimlerine olumsuz etkisi yoktur.
