Investigation of Data of Appendicitis in Two Center.

Aim: This study was conducted to explore the demographic characteristics, incidence, seasonal variation and trends of appendicitis in two center from.

Materials and Methods: The records of all patients with confirmed appendicitis and perforated appendicitis who were treated in both the Medical Faculty Hospital of Selcuk University and Konya Training and Research Hospital, both situated in Konya, Turkey were reviewed between December 2006 and December 2012.

Results: A combination of data obtained from the two centers showed that a total of 390 cases with appendicitis were admitted during the observed period between December 2006 and December 2012 and confirmed histologically. Of total 390 cases, 231(59.2%) were composed of boys and 159 (40.8%) of girls, and the number of boys was statistically and significantly higher, compared to that of girls. Of all cases, 326 (16.4%) were acute appendicitis, and 64 (16.4%) were perforated appendicitis. Within those with perforated appendicitis, the number of girls was 35 (54), significantly higher. Although no significant differences were seen as to seasonal incidence of appendicitis, the incidence was determined to reach peak levels in February (42 cases, 10.8%), August (46 cases, 11.7%) and December (37 cases, 9.5%).

Conclusion: As a consequence, acute appendicitis may be asserted to be seen higher in boys at schooling age and summer months. Within summer time, cases admitted with the complaint of abdominal pain should be evaluated meticulously as to acute appendicitis. Also, acute appendicitis should be certainly considered in the differential diagnosis of adolescent girls, and the treatment should be performed before perforation. Perforated cases should be followed carefully, and a requirement for reoperation should be kept in mind due to complications.
