Virtual classroom and electronic examination in pediatric surgery education: preliminary results

Objective: To evaluate virtual classroom and e-exam applications in pediatric surgery education.

Materials and Methods: The internship evaluation form created by the researcher was used to evaluate the previous internship and to make a comparison between the students who started the internship in Pediatric Surgery. Google Classroom (Google Inc., CA, USA) was used as a virtual classroom tool and Google Quiz (Google Inc., CA, USA) was used for the e-exam application. During the internship period, students were sent prep class questions from the mobile phone application, figures and videos about pathology were shared through the application and all internship notes were uploaded into the application. The exams were conducted as a test at the computer and the student immediately learned the grade after completing the exam. After completing the internship and the exam, the students completed the same internship evaluation form for the Pediatric Surgery Internship. Results were evaluated using SPSS v22 (IBM Inc., NY, USA).

Results: 16 out of 20 students (80% participation rate) completed the forms adequately. There was a significant difference in favor of our internship between the total points given to our internship and the other internships (79.8 versus 69.2, p <0.01). After the other internships, 28% of the students stated that the internship might have an effect on the choice of the profession, whereas the same rate was 63% for pediatric surgery. At the same time, 28% of the students answered “yes” to the question “Would you choose this field as a profession?” for the previous internship whereas this ratio was found to be 50% for the pediatric surgery internship.

Discussion: The use of innovative educational approaches in Pediatric Surgery seems to motivate our students positively. However, in order for these approaches to become standard, multicenter studies with a wider student group are mandatory.
