The Effect of Untethering on Urinary Symptoms and Urodynamic Parameters in Patients with Primary Tethered Cord Syndrome

AIM: We evaluated urinary symptoms (US) and its effect on urodynamic parameters (UDP) and compared US with UDP in patients having spinal cord release surgery due to primary tethered cord syndrome (PTCS).

MATERIAL-METHOD: Patients were evaluated preoperatively and at 3rd&12th postoperative months. Patients were seperated into 4 groups according to the presence of US. (Group 1: preop US positive, postop US negative (n=13); Group 2: preop US pozitive, postop US positive (n=11); Group 3: preop US negative, postop US positive (n=3); Group 4: preop US negative, postop US negative (n=13))

CONCLUSION: Untethering has a beneficial effect on US and urodynamic parameters. We found no correlation between improvement of US and urodynamic findings. US and UDP show similarity at 3rd and 12th postoperative months. Our study shows the significance of both preoperative and postoperative urodynamic studies even if patients have no urinary system symptoms.
