Purpose: Umbilical hernias (UH) are usually closed spontaneously within 2-5 years of age but parents become anxious due to presence of a defect. Recently, Adhesive strapping (AS) has been accepted as standard treatment in different parts of the world. So, this study was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of AS in the management of congenital UH in Bangladesh.
Methods: This quasi experimental study was performed among 60 patients where 30 patients were in AS group and 30 patients were in observation group. Diameter of hernial orifices, total duration of treatment, closure rate, closure speed was measured.
Results: Among 60 patients, only 17 patients achieved complete closure of UH where 10 patients were in group A. The mean duration of treatment was significantly shorter (11.28±2.59 weeks, p-value =0.006) in AS group. The average closure speed was also more in AS group.
Conclusion: Adhesive strapping promotes earlier closure of congenital UH. So, it can be an effective alternative management option of congenital UH.
