INTRODUCTION
Transanal irrigation (TAI) is a therapeutic alternative for the treatment of fecal incontinence (FI) and chronic constipation (CC). Our aim is to evaluate the effectiveness and experience of using TAI from primary caregiver's point of view.
MATERIAL AND METHOD
Descriptive study using validated questionnaires given to the primary caregivers of patients treated with TAI in a 5-years period, in our center. Sociodemographic data, treatment success, health-related quality of life (HR-QoL [PedsQL 4.0 SF15]), treatment adherence (Medication Adherence Report Scale 5 [MARS-5]), treatment satisfaction (Treatment Satisfaction Questionnaire for Medication [TSQM]) and patient independence were evaluated.
RESULTS
25 patients, 1:1 male to female, mean age 12.3±5.6 years (4-21 years). 64% diagnosed of FI (10 neurogenic disorder, 6 organic origin) and 36% diagnosed of CC (5 neurogenic disorder, 1 organic origin, 3 chronic idiopathic constipation). Mean duration of treatment was 30.8±22.3 months (2-68 months). 93% mother as main caregiver. Treatment success rate was 73.3% according to Rome IV criteria. HR-QoL score was high (median 72, IQR 63-100). Treatment adherence, defined as MARS-5 score ≥ 20, was high (80%) (median 23, IQR 18-25). Treatment satisfaction was very good (median 78, IQR 76-84). 70% reported an increase in children independence (median 5, IQR 2-5).
CONCLUSIONS
TAI is an effective therapy in pediatric patients with incontinence or chronic constipation from parents' perspective. The use of this system improves their symptoms, quality of life and degree of independence.
